MHA Traditional Basket Making workshop, August 24th-26th

August 24, 2021 - August 26, 2021

We are co-hosting an upcoming MHA Traditional Basket making workshop August 24th-26th at the MHA Interpretative Center. It will be 3 full days of learning the process and hands-on making of baskets taught by expert basket maker and MHA tribal member, Gloria Wilkinson.

Participants will learn how to make our traditional carrying baskets, also known as burden baskets, using age old twilling techniques. Over three full days, Gloria will provide a background history of the baskets and demonstrate and teach the entire basket making process from beginning to end. All skill levels are welcome, but some hand strength is required. All materials will be provided. The workshop is limited to 10 individuals. Due to limited space, only one member per family please. CEUs will be offered.

Contact Dr. Ruth Plenty Sweetgrass-She Kills if you’re interested in participating (rhall@nhsc.edu).

Sponsored by Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College, the Indigenous Environmental Network Just Transition Project, and the MHA Interpretative Center.
